This year’s Spotlight Theme:
International students in Australia are more than just learners - they are advocates, changemakers, and storytellers shaping a more inclusive future. "Amplifying Voices Through Stories of Change" highlights the real-life experiences of students who have faced challenges whether it’s overcoming financial hardship, breaking through cultural barriers, or fighting for stronger mental health support.
Through powerful storytelling, this event will showcase voices that are often unheard, bringing attention to the urgent need for stronger support and greater recognition of international students as vital contributors to Australia’s society. Each talk will hope to inspire action, bridge understanding, and ignite meaningful change in our communities and beyond.

Spotlight Program Overview:
1. Application Process
The Spotlight journey begins with an open call for applicants across Australian universities.
This year, the program received an exceptionally strong reception from international students, with a higher-than-expected number of submissions from diverse cultural, academic, and professional backgrounds.
From this enthusiastic pool, a select group of speakers was chosen based on the strength of their stories, alignment with the event theme, and potential to inspire. Their varied backgrounds ensure a rich representation of multicultural experiences.
2. Mentorship Matching
Each selected speaker is then paired with a dedicated mentor—a professional who provides personalised guidance as they shape their narrative.
Mentors support speakers in refining their message, developing structure, and strengthening their delivery, ensuring they feel prepared and confident throughout the process.
3. Rehearsals and Preparation
Speakers then undergo a series of preparation activities, which include:
Drafting and polishing their speeches, with mentor feedback
Rehearsal sessions to practise delivery, flow, and stage presence
Technical run-throughs to familiarise speakers with the event flow
Quick check-ins from the Spotlight team to ask how speakers are doing, address concerns, and provide any additional assistance they may need
4. Event Day: Culmination of the Journey
The program culminates in the Spotlight Event, delivered in a TED Talk–style format.
Speakers are grouped into three themed segments, each featuring 3–4 speakers presenting for 5 minutes each.
To deepen engagement and reflection, each segment includes an additional 5 minutes for audience reflection or Q&A, allowing conversations and insights to unfold organically.
